One hand turns to Heaven

Matt Kinnison, an old friend, died on Wednesday, of lung cancer. He was only a year older than me. I don't have any pictures of him, or music, or any of his cartoons. I think there are a couple of letters in a drawer somewhere.

Matt was a hippy in the eighties when it wasn't "allowed", a vegetarian when that was hard to do, and one of the finest chaps I've ever done music with. Thanks, Matt, for:

Trying not to be famous
Excellent cartoons and general silliness
Being in a band who wouldn't give John Peel your record even when he was in the same pub
letting me and Stewart play in the Monotony Commission (and clearing the Clarendon of all punters except a rather miffed Next Band On (but they were crap anyway)
Elephant Spread
Playing I Spy on Chelsea Embankment and seeing a UFO
Silliness about him being descended from a highwayman and me from a judge
General uncategorised aceness.

I'm sorry we lost touch.

I can't say any more, I'm sorry.

RIP mate.

- very sorry for your loss - when i was in a similar situation a gouple of months ago you gave me some goob advice, something along the lines of: "raise a glass for your friend" ( - you probably don't need telling this but at the time, i did )

& take care of yourself

Thanks, that's a good idea. I think I will. "a celebration of the life" is in order, I think. Alcohol used to bugger up his psoriasis so not that, but I will. Thanks mate.

a fistful of sand
good to read your thoughts on matt.he was such a beautiful person and typically a very different person
to each of us.he was reluctant to see some of his friends as his cancer reached it's harshest stages,i think
he feared us seeing him so diminished.but it was a privilege to be able to spend some time with him a few hours before he died and he looked (in neil woodbridge's words) like an ancient celtic king sitting on his high throne, with his minions fussing around him.he looked quite stunning with his straggly hair and a big red beard.both neil and i were teasing him that he should have grown the beard years ago.there is to be no funeral but there will be a celebration of his life, possibly in the dinosaur room at the natural history museum.it might be a wee while til it's organised but we shall endeavour to let all of his friends know,so
we can make it a special event.it's the least we can do for a very very special person.warmest regards, cinder x.
